Following a successful karting career, Lewis graduated to single-seater racing in 2002 in the Formula Renault single seater category and finished third in his first full season of car racing. A second season of Formula Renault followed in 2003 with Lewis dominating the series and setting a championship record with ten wins, 9 fastest laps and 11 pole positions and winning the championship two rounds before the final race.
In 2004, Lewis raced in the highly competitive Formula 3 Euroseries Championship on the same event schedule as the Germany DTM Touring Car Championship. Racing for Manor Motorsport, a rookie team on the European racing scene and Lewis in his first year of Formula 3, he finished 5th having taken a win at the Norisring plus four further podiums.
In 2005, Lewis won the Formula 3 Euroseries Championship racing for the dominant ASM team. In 2006, he joined the ART Grand Prix team in the GP2 Series as a replacement for the previous year's champion Nico Rosberg. His performance in the GP2 Series was impressive. At the European GP2 event he won both races, becoming only the second driver (after Nico Rosberg) to do so in the series history and won at Monaco from pole. At Silverstone Lewis went one better and scored his second double race win becoming the only driver in GP2 history to do so. Lewis became the 2006 GP2 champion.
