Lewis honoured in Spain

Friday, 08 May 2009

World champion Lewis Hamilton added his name to the list of famous drivers and riders celebrated at Champions’ Avenue during a ceremony held today in the Circuit de Catalunya paddock.

The event, which was presided over by the Circuit de Catalunya’s manager, Ramon Praderas, commemorated Lewis’s 2008 world championship victory and his past successes at the famous Spanish track with the unveiling of a special ceremonial plaque.

Also present were Bernie Ecclestone, Carlos Gracia, president of the Real Federación Espanola de Automovilismo, Montmelo’s mayor Manel Ramal and Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team principal Martin Whitmarsh.

Praderas welcomed Lewis, stating: “Today is a special day for us. We have the pleasure of proving to you that you will always be welcome here in Catalunya. Please always stay the same – we need people like you.”

Bernie Ecclestone focused his Lewis’s commitment to grassroots motor racing, despite his rapid ascent to the pinnacle of the sport: “One of the good things about Lewis is that he has never forgotten his roots,” he said. “He’s still supporting karting and other motorsport – not only Formula 1. This is precisely what we need, drivers who don’t forget where they’ve come from.”

Lewis, who unveiled the plaque which thanked Spanish fans for their passion and support, said: “This is a surprising and emotional moment for me. To be here in Catalunya, at one of my favourite tracks, and to be recognised here is very special. I would like to thank the people from Catalunya for their support. I hope I will continue to work hard and make my country and my team proud.”
