Lewis Hamilton visited Brooklands' Mercedes-Benz World today to help launch RoadSense - a new educational initiative designed to teach young children about road safety.
Supported by Mercedes-Benz, Surrey County Council, the Surrey Fire & Rescue Service and Surrey Police, the scheme is currently being piloted in Surrey to teach schoolchildren about the importance of road safety. Half-day courses, which feature discussion groups and supervised driving sessions on the Brooklands facility's road course are being used to educate children about safer driving.
The initiative follows the Department For Transport's target to reduce the total number of road deaths and injuries among children and young people by at least 50 per cent by 2020.
Lewis was present at the event in his role as a Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy ambassador. He took part in a number of Q&A sessions and seminars with local schoolchildren to encourage them to think more actively about safer driving and road safety.
Speaking at the event, Lewis said: "RoadSense is a great initiative developed by the Driving Academy that will hopefully benefit young people and improve road safety nationwide as it rolls out in the future. Whether a pedestrian, passenger or driver, we all have a responsibility to road safety when out on the road, so it's great to see that Mercedes-Benz have created a course that will hopefully get young people thinking about it from an early age."
